Geohazard Assessment at Ringlet, Cameron Highlands

A section of the TNB 275kV transmission line right-of-way at Ringlet, Cameron Highlands was identified as requiring urgent attention following landslide incidents in the area. Geotechnica Sdn Bhd was engaged by TNB and Minconsult Sdn Bhd to assess and rate the slope hazard.

Project Overview

Scope, conditions & requirements

Project Scope

Slope hazard and risk assessment along a section of the TNB 275kV right-of-way at Ringlet, Cameron Highlands.

Site Conditions

The area had experienced landslide incidents requiring urgent attention, with heavy rainfall, geomorphology, geologic material and human activity all present as contributing factors.

Investigation Requirements

A hazard rating needed to be established for each slope using the Slope Information Management System (SIMS), incorporating topography, slope geometry and geological parameters.

Our Approach

How the incident was assessed

Soil Investigation

Subsurface data collection to characterise ground conditions along the affected right-of-way.

Geophysical Seismic Survey

Non-invasive assessment of subsurface stiffness and structure beneath the corridor.

LiDAR Acquisition

Terrain data captured to support the SIMS hazard rating using topography and slope geometry.

Key Findings

What the study revealed

Finding 1

Heavy rainfall, geomorphology and the geologic material of the area, combined with human activity, were identified as the main contributors to the slope failures.

Finding 2

Adverse geological features were also identified as contributing to the instability, alongside the environmental and human factors above.

Project Outcomes

How the findings are used

Interim mitigation measures were proposed ahead of permanent rectification, combining short- and long-term solutions to protect the TNB 275kV corridor while the SIMS hazard rating informed prioritisation of remedial work.
